CM Academy of Dog Training

We offer group classes and private in- home training. We help people create well trained dogs that are great additions to the family. Dogs are great companions but a well trained dog is the best companion.  The private, in- home option is for people with hard to manage or aggressive dogs or to quick start puppy training. The private work also works well for people who have a schedule that cannot work with the group schedule options. The goal for all dogs that start in private is to get them into the group classes for the social benefit. The ability to join the group classes is an extra benefit.

There is no wait to get in to the group classes as we do not cycle the classes. With the group classes, C.M. offers a one time a week for six weeks course, a two times a week for six months course. We suggest this option for people with small dogs, and puppies to help you get through different developmental phases such as terrible twos, and adolescence,  and also offer a year of unlimited training.  The group classes are great for older dogs as well just additional socialization and fun. Group classes are not only fun for the dog but a great social opportunity to get to know other dog lovers; many friendships have come out of our group classes. We currently offer classes three time a week;  Monday evening at 5:30 at the Eldridge Community Center, Wednesday evening at 6:00 at Ridgecrest Village in Davenport, and Saturday morning at 8:30 at Ridgecrest village. Call Jim, 563-210-8556, for pricing and details.

Therapy Dogs can go to places like retirement homes, nursing homes and some hospitals. We register our Therapy Dogs through Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs.

We also train dog and handler teams to become Professional Therapy Dogs.

Professional Therapy dogs are trained to assist teachers in the classroom to help bridge a gap with hard-to-reach students or students with learning disabilities. These dogs offer a calming effect to students who have anxiety or emotional issues. These dogs also assist in other venues such as Occupational Therapy clinics and Mental Health Clinics.

We can offer more affordable Service Dogs because we train the dog and handler at the same time. In some cases the person in need already has a dog that might be indicating to their condition and not realize it. In cases like this, the training time can be shortened and the cost would be less. In most cases, especially with kids, I like to start with puppies and start working with them as early as nine weeks and put a lot of effort to get the puppy bonded to the individual that will be using it. If it is going to be a seizure or diabetic alert dog, it will need to know the individuals normal body chemistry so that when that normal changes, the dog will know to react to that change. Each case is different but starting with a puppy it can take up to a year or a little more for the dog to be reliable and indicate reliably as it should.  We also train emotional support dogs as well physical support dogs.

WE have a referral service for those of you that need training for your hunting dog.

Please feel free to call Jim at 563-210-8556 to discuss any of these training options and costs

Jim Stenfeldt, CM Academy of Dog Training

Master Trainer & Owner

Jim Stenfeldt is a master trainer and considered a local dog whisperer in his field. 37 years of experience has made him and expert in dog and pack behavior. His innate ability to quickly identify the root of a dog's issue, and then fix the problem with ease has earned him this reputation. Jim has been a tester/observer for Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Ine for 10 years. Since 2001, he has screened over 700 dog/handler teams and certified over 175 specifically for the acute care hospital environment.

In the past ten years, C.M. Academy has certified dogs to work successfully as professional Therapy Dogs in several schools around the Quad City area. These include Clinton CUSD, Davenport CUSD, Maquoketa CUSD, Dubuque CUSD, Muscatine CUSD and Moline/Genese CUSD., along with working with teachers and administrators in the school settings. CM has also trained therapy and mobility support dogs in local adult care facilities, along with resident dogs for local memory care facilities. We also do weekly visits to nursing homes with well trained class dogs. Jim Stenfeldt, founder of CM Academy of Dog Training, has been training dogs, pet owners, handlers, and instructors for over 30 years. CM Academy offers private and group classes that cover a range of fields which include therapy, tracking, basic obedience, utility, basic obedience and Service Dog Training (mobility assistance, packing, hearing, weight bearing, and scent detection).

Jim uses positive reinforcement training, and prefers verbal and physical reinforcement rather than treats or a clicker. He specializes in aggression rehabilitation. Dog training is his full time job, not a part-time hobby.

We offer group dog obedience training as well as private in- home consultation and training. We offer trained dogs for people who want a well trained pet but don't want to do the puppy thing or just don't have the time to do it themselves. We can find a dog for you or you can send your dog to us for the training.

Jim owned International K-9 Operations, a private drug search company that provided searches for federal and state prison facilities, area school districts, local law enforcement, private industry, and households. International is a certifying agency for working dogs in many sectors.

We are experts in scent detection and recently started applying our expertise by training bedbug detection dogs to sell to companies in need and offer a consultation service for people who need help with their existing dogs.

We can furnish references upon request.

Mary Ray, CM Academy of Dog Training

Training Assistant

Mary Ray has trained off and on with C.M. Academy for 30 years. She has training experience with several breeds — from her giant Wolfhounds, Doodles, and Malamute to her Yorkies, just to name a few.

Mary keeps the class running in the event that Jim gets busy helping someone in the class. She created that role one night after getting bored while waiting for Jim to resolve a training issue. She has been a valuable part of C.M. training ever since.
